Alice and Dan: Art Exhibition
Located in Taliaferro Hall and the Bookstore at St. John’s Cathedral
June 19th until September 19th
The exhibition displays the work of two Jacksonville artists, Alice and Dan Hadwin, whose church home was (Alice recently passed away) and is (Dan’s) St. John’s Cathedral. It is an exhibition that presents a true meeting of two very talented artists.
Alice Hadwin’s charcoal portraits are incredibly perceptive in their attention to detail. They capture in detail the essence of the person represented. They are in the great tradition of Western portraiture. Especially meaningful is the joint portrait of Dan and Alice, from which the exhibition takes its title. It speaks of love and affection. Indeed it suggests sentiments like those Shakespeare’s Sonnet 116: “the marriage of true minds.”
In Alice’s paintings color relationships are explored. The gestures of her brush strokes, recorded in the paintings, present the artist to us even more directly than the realism of her portraits do. These paintings embody the presence of the artist.
In her portrait of their Turkish guide Alice Hadwin includes significant details of a site they visited. Sites Dan no doubt captured in photographic images.
Dan Hadwin's photographs range from a dazzling display of red clouds swirling above the Himalayas, to a pictorial space filled by bamboo stalks raising themselves boldly right there in front of his lens. His photos document what her portrait of the guide do: a joint appreciation of particular places that Alice and Dan shared.
Dan Hadwin's photographs show us, through carefully selected details of scenes, the exquisite beauty that his photographs makes available to us, if we only had the eyes for them. Hadwin exposes us to the beauty of the intimate details of Nature. He is especially sensitive to architecture in his color and black and white photos.
Both artists use the tools of their artistic trade to delight, enlighten and refresh us. The exhibition is open to the public during the hours the Cathedral is open.
